Any doubts I have about this switch are immediately rectified as the meal lands on my table. In the beginning there were few full-time fishermen, but as Mama’s grew, so did the fishing community. They brought their fish directly to the restaurant where it was filleted and served within 24 hours. Floyd printed the names of the fisherman and where the fish was caught on the daily menu. Because the restaurant tends to be booked months in advance, we highly recommend booking early as you plan for your special day. Humming along to the sweet Hawaiian tunes emitting from the dining room’s speakers, I’m patiently awaiting the crown jewel of my meal. The Polynesian Black Pearl, which draws longing stares from other diners as it arrives at my table, is a fitting end to my extravagant meal.
After a few weeks a young Marquesan came aboard as crew. For three months they explored the islands of the Marquesas, sometimes sailing to villages that had never been visited by a sailboat. But I still maintain that a visit to Mama’s is a worthwhile experience to try at least once — if it isn’t outside of your budget. Mama’s Fish House has a reputation as one of the most notable fine dining restaurants on Maui, specializing in fresh seafood and evoking a classic Polynesian island aesthetic. While the food (and the accompanying prices) screams upscale, the restaurant itself lends a casual elegance that suits the carefree island life. Although the restaurant is easily considered fine dining, probably some of the finest on Maui, waitresses are clad in muumuu and waiters don colorful aloha shirts. Much of the indoor decor features beautiful hardwood designs and the colorful tablecloths and rattan chairs give off a relaxing country vibe. Following the sea breeze that keeps the restaurant cool, I turn toward the ocean and gaze out at the green lawn, the palm trees and the golden beach that fronts the property.

There was good French cooking there and good French canned goods (the NZ food and canned goods were barely edible). At sunset the family would sometimes build a small campfire on the beach and cook their dinner. A whole breadfruit would be baked in the fire and then eaten with canned butter. Dessert was fresh or canned fruit (Isaac loved canned peaches).
Mama’s has been known for many years for its wonderful fresh fish preparations. But serving sizes are not as large as at many of Maui’s other fine-dining restaurants, and prices at Mama’s are among the highest on Maui. It takes about an hour to drive to Mama’s from the main Maui resort areas of Kaʻanapali and Wailea.
I’d argue that there’s no better place to splurge on fresh seafood for dinner (or lunch) when you’re on Maui celebrating a special event. They were determined to showcase the fish and the foods of Polynesia to their customers. They re-introduced breadfruit and other long-neglected Polynesian foods to their menu and they encouraged local farmers to grow the best organic produce. New hotels were opening and young people were moving to Maui to work in them.
